Beside a clapboard side of a structure, Navy seaman Robert Airey stands to the left of his mother, Louise Airey. He has his "sailor's hat" tilted to the side, one arm on his hip and the other around his mother. He is in a seaman's uniform and his mother is in a shaw collared button coat with flap pockets. She has dark hair and wears a soft tam. Her hand is raised to grasp the hand at her shoulder. They stand on a dirt road in front of a temporary-appearing building.
