Description:
A color photographic print of a sign depicting a bust of an Indian in profile. His hair is black, his skin sepia and he is wearing a deep orange headband, feather and blanket. The feather has the words Dipsea Highway and the blanket says Tamal Chief. The background is golden orange. Beside the figure on the background are three pieces of paper with printing on them (see notes).
Medium:
Photographic Paper
Notes:
The top printed matter is a copy of an article From the Independent Journal dated 10/11/23 describing the dedication of the sign at Manzanita junction under the auspices of the Automobile Association. It was hoped that the sign would generate interest and money for the widening and surfacing of incomplete portions of the highway running from Manzanita to Bolinas Bay. It was attended by various Marin County dignitaries as well as Tamalpais High School attendees who were brought to the ceremony by the stage used to bring them to school.
The second piece of paper talks about the origin of the Dipsea race (started by two members of the Olympic Club who raced each other the first time).
The bottom piece of paper has the title 'Tamal Chief' , states that it is paint on metal and is part of the collection belonging to Caro Tanner MacPherson.
The sign itself is not on a background but is a cutout of the chief.
The photograph is from the Mt. Tam art show. See 1993-695 and 696
